Back in May, Kimmy reached out to me about doing a couple’s session while her and her boyfriend, Austin, were staying up at their favorite campsite in Tennessee. Not but a few hours after Kimmy reached out and we finalized the details with me, Austin shot me a DM on my Instagram to let me know of his plan — while at the campsite, he had planned on proposing to her, but this just made the experience that much more special.
I love doing surprise proposals. Like, they’re literally my most favorite things to capture aside from the actual wedding day because that moment is just oh so sweet.
Kimmy wanted to highlight the intimate and fun side of her and Austin’s relationship and I was so down for that!
It was a pretty cold and windy afternoon for it to be the beginning of June, but as you will see, it made for the most magical and whimsical photos when Austin popped the big question!
Kimmy and Austin switched outfits, and at that point, I was just as nervous as Austin was! I looked at him and basically mouthed “What are you doing?!” I didn’t know when he was going to ask Kimmy, but when he did, oh man… I’ll just have to show you!
I mean… just look at how happy she is!
I’m a loser and I’ll admit it, I always cry whenever I do surprise proposals. I just love love.
I want to include the TikTok I made about Kimmy and Austin’s surprise proposal because honestly, I watch it over and over and realize how sweet this day really was for them.

Let’s get into WHY you need to have a photographer there to capture your proposal. Also, if you’re reading this, show your partner for you know, “encouragement” 😉
I’ve heard a ton of comments saying how “good” iPhones and other phones have gotten over the years and let’s be honest here — Uncle Jerry with his shaky hands and iPhone 8 will never be better than me and my Nikon, period. You deserve to have someone at your proposal who is there to help capture every second.
I’ve heard from friends that their proposal was a total blur. They obviously remember where they were and how they asked, but most people have said that they don’t remember what was said — so, if you’re going to forget the most important words your partner has said thus far in your relationship, at least hire a photographer to capture all of the amazing things that your proposal is so you can look back on it and remember how special it is, even if your mind failed you!
Proudly announcing your engagement is something that many couples dream of. So, why not wow everyone with incredible images that tell the proposal’s story step-by-step? Not to mention, having these images for the rest of your life to look back on is SO important. I didn’t realize how important pictures were until that’s the only thing that you have of someone, and so since then, I’ve committed myself to taking the picture, even if I don’t look my best. I know I’ve photographed a few surprise proposals, and the girls always laugh and say “don’t get me ugly crying!” but really, that’s what you want because it captures the true emotion and love you have!
and lastly —
As a wedding and elopement photographer, I have the honor of being a part of people’s most special days pretty regularly. Thankfully, I know how to navigate the nerves and take some of the most amazing images for you to cherish for years to come. Not only will you get to vibe with me for the afternoon, you’ll get a little taste of what it’s like to work with me! Whether you’re reading this blog and wanting to hire me as your photographer for engagement or wedding, or you’re in need of extra encouragement to hire a photographer for these events in general — DO IT! You cannot relive these moments unless you have it captured, and why not hire someone who is dedicated to encapsulating who you and your partner are?
